[A pause, and when she speaks again, she's deadly serious.]

This place is called Mayfield. It's supposed to be an Outside World town in America, circa the 1950s. This means it's a bit boring compared to things at home, or so it would seem on the outside.

...it does things to people. Strange things. Apparently death isn't uncommon, though no one actually stays dead permanently.

More than that...it has a way of doing strange things to one's head. As an example, I'm sure you've seen the people who are uncannily happy? The ones that are --

[At that moment, one of the drone children comes up, asking her if they can go to the park again. She nods and sends the boy outside, and he's followed by a girl a moment later. A moment later, they're outside on bicycles and off to play.]

-- like that. Who honestly believe I'm their mother, when I'm no such thing. We call them 'drones'. And this place can do it to any one of us.

[She's speaking from experience.]
